About Huetares

The Huetares are one of the indigenous peoples who have significantly contributed to the cultural landscape of the Costa Rica. Historically, they inhabited regions in what is now known as the central and northern parts of Costa Rica. The Huetares are skilled agriculturalists, cultivating crops like maize, beans, and squash, while also using the abundant natural resources of the rainforests for sustenance and medicinal purposes.

Despite centuries of cultural assimilation and colonization, elements of Huetares' heritage persist in Costa Rican society, including linguistic influences and traditional knowledge of natural resources. Today, efforts are being made to preserve and revitalize Huetares' culture and identity, with initiatives focusing on language revitalization, cultural education, and community empowerment.

The Huetares' legacy serves as a reminder of the rich diversity of indigenous cultures in Costa Rica and the importance of recognizing and honoring their contributions to the nation's history and heritage.

Huetar Tour in Quitirrisí and Ciudad Colón

Immerse yourself in the customs of the Huetar people and discover how this indigenous population lives today. It's a truly captivating experience!

The adventure begins at 8:00 am on the road to Puriscal in Quitirrisí, where you'll set off to uncover the secrets of this community and its ancestral traditions.

Learn about how deeply rooted the Huetar indigenous people are to Mother Nature as you walk along trails discussing the benefits of ancient medicine for this tribe. Did you know that the primitive language of this population was lost 200 years ago due to colonization? Despite this, there are still names of animals, mountains, and plants linked to their native language.

Witness firsthand the ancient technique of stone-ground maize, the production of dyes, and handmade pieces crafted from natural fibers. Along the route, you'll also visit tombs and ceremonial centers to further delve into their unique way of life.

Next, you'll head to Ciudad Colón, just 9 kilometers from Quitirrisí. Upon arrival, you'll visit a family dedicated to the creation of traditional Costa Rican masks. These masks have their origins in colonial and Amerindian festivities and are still used in religious and popular celebrations today. Don't they remind you of Spanish giants and big heads?

You'll conclude the experience by listening to cimarrona music and enjoying a delicious traditional lunch. Bon appétit!

With renewed energy, you'll wrap up the day at Ciudad Colón Park by 4:00 pm.

Please note that the tour is only available in Spanish. Transportation from Quitirrisí to Ciudad Colón is not included, so you'll need to travel in your own vehicle or take a local bus.
